Final Major Project: Progress #2

Okay, so I kind of failed at these progress posts for my Final Major Project, especially seen as though I finished the course yesterday which means my exhibition is now up and I have officially finished college forever! I should probably explain why I am writing this 'Progress' post now. I wanted to post these images before my final exhibition was up, but I didn't want people to see what was going to be in my exhibition before they actually saw my exhibition. Basically, I just didn't want to ruin the surprise of what I was going to be presenting. I will be writing a post very soon on my final exhibition so you can see images of how I presented this dress and also the second dress I made which I didn't manage to take professional pictures of like these *sigh*.

I'll be completely honest here when I say this dress caused me to sit on a heap on the floor crying endlessly to anyone that came to talk to me. I wish I was being dramatic. I've always had the issue when making these types of dresses that the weight of the paper is so heavy that it can pull the origami pieces apart. I thought I'd solved that issue with this dress, however when I took it off the mannequin to be modelled by my beautiful friend Izzie, it all fell apart along with my hopes of getting a good grade. Now I probably am being dramatic. Thankfully, I did manage to get some really good photos of my dress before it all completely broke, and I did eventually manage to re-make the dress even if it did turn me into an emotional wreck, so I still used this dress in my final exhibition. Here are some of the pictures from my photoshoot.

I hope you liked these images as much as I do! I may have finished this course now but I still have a few more posts coming up showing you my final exhibition and also an overview of the whole course. See you next time!

Final Major Project: Progress #1

Hi Everyone!
I started my Final Major Project for my Art Foundation course a few week back, so I wanted to start putting some images on my blog of some of the work I create going on to my final exhibition. For previous projects on this course I have created dresses using paper origami (you can see the last dress I made here) so I wanted to explore this method further and also bring in different techniques in order to make my exhibition piece bigger and better than my previous work. One of the new techniques I am wanting to bring into my work is laser cutting patterns to include on my designs. So far I have laser cut a few test pieces to work with on the mannequin and I am liking how they look, so this is something I am going to continue working with. I really liked combining the laser cut outs with the origami as I think the delicacy of the cut outs contrasts really well against the geometric shapes.

Now that I have experimented on the mannequin and realised I definitely want to work with origami and laser cutting, I decided to take my work onto Photoshop and start designing some dress ideas so I can start thinking more about what I actually want to create for my final exhibition. The idea behind my whole work is the contrast between good and evil, and I know I want to create something really extravagant and theatrical, so these are just a couple of quick Photoshop pieces I created yesterday as a starting point. If anyone would like a blog post or video on how I use Photoshop to edit designs I'd be happy to do that.

I'm starting to get to the most exciting (and probably most stressful) part of my project now where it's going to be full on designing and making, so look forward to lots more pictures soon when I'm in full swing with it.

Geometric Origami Dress

For the last couple of years I've been on and off with blogging, going through stages where I'd update at least once a week, and then getting too busy with college and work so that I'd miss a few weeks and then get annoyed that I've ruined it. I've deleted my blog so many times and then brought it back with new names, losing all my followers in the process. I feel like blogging is a huge part of my life, and I miss the feeling of writing and uploading new posts, so I've decided to bring back my blog and write about something that is also a big part of my life at the minute. Fashion. I am currently on an Art Foundation course, with my pathway in the course being Fashion/Costume design. For a recent project called 'Paris in the Park' we had to create a piece of work inspired by our residential trip to Paris, that would be presented in our local park for an outdoors exhibition. I decided to create a floor length, geometric style dress made out of paper origami. The inspiration from Paris came from the structural landmarks such as the Louvre and the Eiffel Tower, and I created the pattern on the dress from the clock in the Musee D'Orsey. I made the dress a bright pink colour so that it would stand out really well when presented outdoors in the park, however when I later photographed my dress being modelled by my gorgeous friend Beth, I decided to edit some of them to black and white. I really liked the effect this gave as it brought more attention to the geometric style and the pattern rather than the bright colour, and I also liked the contrast within the images. I thought I'd share a few of my favourite images of my dress with you instead of going into too much detail of how I actually made the dress, as I don't want to bore you with all the details.

I will now be uploading regular posts, showing you the work I create, as well as other fashion, beauty and lifestyle posts.
Thanks for reading and feel free to leave any comments!!
